Biography

Bertrand Turnbull and his cousin Philip were both members of the bronze medal-winning Welsh team at the 1908 London Olympics. An outstanding goalkeeper, Bertrand started playing hockey during his time at Downside College in Bath. He joined Cardiff Hockey Club in 1906 and made his international début for Wales against England at Llandudno shortly afterwards, when just 18-years-of-age. He played for Wales 19 times and was captain in 1914. He later played his club hockey with Penarth.

Turnbull was also a fine cricketer and played Minor Counties cricket for Glamorgan and was for many years chairman of the club and was on the executive committee when they were admitted into the County Championship in 1921. Turnbull played just one First Class match, for Gloucestershire against Cambridge University in 1911. At the time of his death, he was the managing director of the family firm of shipowners and brokers, Turnbulls (Cardiff) Limited. He was also at one time, a director of the British Steam Ship Owner’s Association.
