Biography

The son of a Cardiff Justice of the Peace, Philip Turnbull was educated at Downside College in Bath, after which he went on a world tour before joining his father’s ship-owning business, Turnbull Brothers. Philip was a keen supporter of both Cardiff Rugby Union and Glamorgan County Cricket Clubs, and was a Welsh international hockey captain and, along with his cousin Bertrand, won a bronze medal at the 1908 London Olympics.

Two of Philip Turnbull’s sons became top class rugby union players. Bernard was a Cardiff and Wales international centre, while Kevin was a forward with Cardiff and later Blackheath. Another son, Maurice, was captain of the Glamorgan County Cricket side, and just three days before his father’s death, set sail for South Africa on tour with the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club). Philip’s brother Harold was a former Lord Mayor of Cardiff.
