Biography

All-round sportsman Peter Wilson was one of the greatest field hockey players to ever represent Wales. Wilson was known as “PJ” . He attended Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate, before going to St. Edmund Hall, Oxford where he won his hockey Blue in 1962. Also in 1962 he was appointed secretary of the Oxford University Hockey Club. He also played in the 1963 Varsity Match. From 1963 to 1978 Wilson played in 87 matches for his country, including captaining the side 49 times from 1973 to the end of his career. He made his international début for Wales in March 1963 against Ireland in Dublin. It would be two years before he scored his first goal for Wales, in a match against Scotland, but he remained a mainstay in the team for 15 years. In 1974 Wilson was part of the team that won the Triple Crown, the first time since its inception in 1903, with victory over England in Cardiff.

In addition to playing for the Welsh national team Wilson also played for Oxford University and the Welsh Dragons Hockey club, and also represented the Great Britain team. His first match for Great Britain was also in 1963, with him going on to play in 35 games, including one as the team captain. In 1968 Wilson was part of the British team for the Mexico City Olympics, where he played in three group matches and their classification match against East Germany.

Wilson was also talented at tennis, football, rugby, and golf, and represented Wales internationally at squash. Whilst at Oxford University he also played in two first-class cricket matches in June 1964, the first against Hampshire and the second against Derbyshire. Outside of sport Wilson worked as a teacher at Dragon School, Oxford where he taught for more than 50 years.
