Biography

Field hockey player Kutti Weiß was a substitute but did not play in the first German team to win an Olympic hockey medal, when they beat Belgium 3-0 to win the bronze medal at Amsterdam in 1928. He won 40 international caps between 1927-47, and remained Germany’s most capped player until 1956. He was one of three players from the 1928 Olympic squad to win a silver medal on home soil in 1936 when Germany were beaten 8-1 by India in the Olympic final. At club level he played for Berliner SC, becoming German champions 1937-38 and 1944.

Weiß was also a versatile decathlete winning the German Championship in 1927, 1929 and 1930, and was also runner-up in 1926, and set two German records in 1927 and 1929. He was also involved in the German record breaking relay squads over 4x200m, and 4x400m in 1929, and over 10x100m in 1927. In 1928 he finished second at the World Student Games in the discus and fifth in the shot.

Weiß did not return to his studies after a sports trip to Japan in 1929. Until the outbreak of World War II he was an employee of an insurance company. After the war, he worked full-time as coach of Harvesteshuder Tennis and Hockey Club (until 1972), whom he guided to six German women’s championships. He participated in the Olympics again, at Helsinki in 1952, as the chief coach of the German field hockey team.
