Biography

Varinder Singh was an Indian hockey player who won multiple medals with the national team during the 1970s. Singh began playing hockey in inter-school tournaments while he was at the Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar, Punjab. At the age of 26, Singh was called up to the Indian national hockey team. At the 1972 München Olympics, Singh was part of the team that won the bronze medal. Four years later, Singh also competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. However, the Indian team finished in a disappointing seventh place, despite them winning the Hockey World Cup the previous year in Kuala Lumpur. As well as the gold at the Hockey World Cup, Singh won a silver medal at the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam and two silver medals at the Asian Games.

Domestically, Singh played for Indian Railways, also working as an officer for the company. Following his retirement from the railways, Singh worked for the Punjab Sports Department. In 2007, the Indian government honoured Singh with the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games.
