As a mainstay in Malaysian field hockey Lawrence Van Huizen represented the nation as both a player and coach during his long career. Van Huizen played for the national team during the 1950s and 1960s, competing at the Asian Games in 1958 and 1962. At the latter he won bronze after Malaya defeated Japan 2–0 in the medal match. Two years later he represented Malaysia at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, playing in six matches and scoring the team’s only goal in their 3–1 loss to India.
The following decade Van Huizen worked as the assistant coach of the men’s team at the 1975 World Cup. One year later he was also part of the panel of coaches at the Quaid-e-Azam International Tournament in Pakistan. He then coached the women’s national team from 1981 to 1986. His brother Peter also played hockey for Malaysia at the Tokyo Olympics, with his son Stephen later playing at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
