Åke Lindqvist

Åke Lindqvist was a Swedish architect and the son of a painter. His son from his first marriage is the former Marshal of the Realm, Svante Lindqvist (*1948). His second wife’s father was graphic artist Reinhold von Rosen (1894-1961).

Åke Lindqvist studied at the Royal Institute of Technology until 1939 and at the Royal Institute of Art until 1943. The following year he opened an architectural office in Stockholm, designing numerous public buildings throughout Sweden, mainly school buildings, swimming pools, and homes for the elderly. From 1959-60, Lindqvist acted as a UNESCO expert on the new building of Damascus University and on several occasions lectured as a visiting professor at universities in the United States. From 1961-78, he represented Sweden in the International Working Group on Sports Construction (IAKS).

In the Official Report a model of his Bath and Sports Building for Stockholm is shown. This was the design of the Sports Hall in Högdalen for which he was awarded 1st prize in a competition in 1948. In fact, the final planning did not begin before 1958 and Högdalens sim- och idrottshall was only completed in 1971.
