Biography

Katie Baxter fenced foil at the 1960 Roma Olympics. She had started out as a tennis player, but switched to fencing in 1949 and trained at The Swords Club. Baxter first competed at the Australian Nationals in 1951 and was later a reserve on the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games team. In 1959 she won the New South Wales State Open and the National Open in foil, which qualified her for the 1960 Olympic team.

Baxter worked with American Express, which enabled her to travel frequently to compete and train. She appeared at the Australian Nationals through 1967, and continued to fence recreationally through 1979. Baxter served as sectional manager at the 1972 München Olympics, and also held roles as Secretary and Delegate for New South Wales Fencing and The Swords Club.
