Biography

Margit Elek followed her sister, the two-time Olympic champion Ilona Elek, into fencing under coach István Fodor. Elek competed for DAC, KASÉ, MNDSZ Atalante SE, Lokomotív SE, and Bp. Honvéd SE over a period of 25 years.

During her career Elek won one Hungarian individual title and five team titles. She also represented Hungary 50 times between 1931 and 1955, where she was part of five World Championship and three European Championship-winning teams. In 1934 she won European silver behind her sister. She also participated in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, finishing sixth in London.

After retiring Elek worked at the Ministry of Finance. Together with her sister, she co-authored an autobiography titled “This Is How We Fought” (1968).
