Marco Montoya had a promising start to his career as a judoka, becoming the under-23 champion in Colombia in 2012, followed by winning the under-18 title at the South American Championships in 2013. Montoya then won bronze at the under-18 Pan American Championships in 2013 and silver at the under-21 Pan American Cup in 2014. That same year he competed in the mixed team and <81kg events at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. After moving up to the senior ranks he continued to win medals at the Colombian championships. Sadly, however, Montoya was only 27-years-old when he died in December 2023.
