Biography

Bill Giles had a long career as a quartermaster-sergeant with the 17th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer School of Arms and was honorary secretary of their boxing section. He was an excellent rifle shooter and represented his regiment in competitive matches on many occasions. Giles’ involvement in boxing saw him officiate as a referee and judge, and he was one of the judges for the semi-final heavyweight clash between John Douglas and Rube Warnes at the 1908 London Olympics, when Douglas knocked out his fellow Briton in the second round. Giles, a former president of the St. Pancras Boxing Club, refereed at the ABA Championships up to the outbreak of World War I.
