Raafat Masoud had numerous podium finishes at the Egyptian national championships after World War II, but was not consistent enough to be a regular member of the country’s international delegations. At the 1948 London Olympics, therefore, he attended as a reserve only and did not actually take part. He continued to compete into the early-1950s and did take part in the 1950 World Championships, where he was 53rd in the individual all-around and sixth with the team. At the 1952 national championships, he was runner-up in the individual all-around, behind Mahmoud Safwat, but did not attend the Helsinki Olympics that year. By career he was a military officer and was killed during the events surrounding the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. A festival was held in his honor in Cairo in November of that year.
