Biography

Leonid Grinyov graduated from the Pavlovsk Military School in St. Petersburg in 1909. Subsequently, he served as a second lieutenant in the 1st Fortress Artillery Battalion of the Zegrzh Fortress (now Zegrze in Poland) and later as an artillery lieutenant in the Novogeorgievsk Fortress (now Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in Poland). In 1912, Grinyov competed in the Olympic Games in Stockholm in the individual foil event and was eliminated after losing four of his five bouts in round one.

During World War I, Grinyov served as a staff captain in the artillery and was taken prisoner of war by German forces following the siege of Novogeorgievsk. In 1916, he received the Order of St. Stanislav. After the war, he emigrated to France and worked as a taxi driver.
