Anatoly Yakovlev was the son of an officer and received a military education himself at the Odessa Infantry Cadet School. From 1906, he served as a second lieutenant in the 128th Stary Oskol Infantry Regiment. In 1910, he was transferred as regimental adjutant to the 13th Rifle Regiment. With this regiment, he also served in World War I and was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav.
In 1912, Yakovlev competed in the Olympic Games in Stockholm in the individual foil event and was eliminated after losing all of his four bouts in round one.
During the Civil War, he became a centurion in the army of the self-proclaimed Hetman of Ukraine, which lasted until 1918. Subsequently, Yakovlev was a regimental captain of the 17th Tiraspol Regiment. Nothing is known about his further fate.
