A member of the Abbey club in Edinburgh, William Campbell won many East of Scotland amateur wrestling titles. He reached three finals at the 1926 Championships, winning the bantam- and featherweight but losing in the heavier welterweight final. As a result of beating Holyrood’s C. Marshall in the 1928 bantamweight final, Campbell was selected as reserve to the national champion Bart Sansum for the Amsterdam Olympics.
