Islington-based H. S. How started wrestling before World War I and was a member of the London Amateur Wrestling Society. He won the Middlesex bantamweight title in 1912 and followed that by beating B. Lomax of Bolton for the national title at Bradford.
After the War, How reached the semi-final of the national championship in 1919 but had to retire after injuring his ribs against Pietro Tordera of the Swiss GS. How lost to Bert Sansum in the final trial for the bantamweight division at the 1924 Paris Olympics. How was a reserve at the Games behind Sansum and the other GB entrant Sonny Darby. After the Paris Games, How became a wrestling official, referee, judge, and steward, and went to his second Olympics in 1952 as GB team manager, assisted by George MacKenzie.
