Footballer René Bonora was a forceful defender who won the Cuban Top League title with F.C. Granjeros in 1970, 1975, and 1977. On the international stage he played for Cuba on many occasions and won three Central American and Caribbean Games gold medals (1970, 1974, and 1978). Bonora was also a member of the Cuban team coached by North Korean Ha Kim-Yong that won the bronze medal at the 1971 Pan American Games behind Argentina and Colombia.
Bonoro also participated in the 1976 Montréal Olympics and played in the memorable goalless draw against the reigning champions Poland, who had also finished third in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. After his retirement from active sport, Bonoro was outstanding as a trainer of new generations of footballers in Camagüey, leading youth teams who were crowned national champion three times. He was later appointed commissioner of football in Camagüey from the late 1980s until 2003.
