Biography

Anthon Olsen played for various clubs in København (Copenhagen) in his youth but spent his entire senior career with B.93. For this club, he made his début as a 16-year-old and played his last match at the age of 38. In 1916, he scored two goals in the final of the Danish Championship helping B.93 to win the title. Olsen won another national championship with B.93 in 1927. He is still (thru 2024) the B.93 player who has scored the most goals. During his 23 seasons as the team’s forward he scored 268 goals in 227 matches.

At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Denmark had a bye in round one and defeated Norway and the Netherlands convincingly to reach the final. Here they lost 4-2 to Great Britain (England) winning Olympic silver. Olsen played in all three matches of the Danish team and scored seven goals including the two Danish goals in the final. The first game against Norway was also his début as an international. He won his final cap in 1927 against Germany. In his 16 matches for the Danish side he scored a total of 14 goals including 13 in his first eight games.

Olsen also played cricket regularly for B.93 beginning in 1911 and was on the cricket playing committee from 1914-46. He played 150 games and scored over 2,300 runs including a century. Olsen won eight matches for Københavns Boldspil-Union (Copenhagen Football Union, KBU), which included cricket at the time, and was a member of the KBU playing committee for 20 years. After World War II, he was B.93’s treasurer from 1947-53.

Anthon Olsen was the son of a shipyard worker and was trained as a marine engineer. He often went to sea but later worked as an engineer in København’s Østerbro Svømmehal, which was designed by Frederik Hvalsøe and Arthur Wittmaack.
