Biography

Salvadoran football midfielder Juan Ramón Martínez began his career as a junior player with CD Águila in 1964 before making his senior début with the Guatemalan team CSD Municipal in 1965. By 1967 Martínez had returned to Águila, staying with the club for the next three seasons. He played for several other clubs in El Salvador during the 1970s, winning two league titles during his career. Martínez also represented the El Salvador national football team in 32 matches from 1967 to 1976, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squad that competed in the football tournament at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he scored their only goal in the team’s 3–1 defeat to Israel. Martínez will undoubtably be remembered for scoring the winning goal against Haiti in their FIFA World Cup qualification match in December 1969, with El Salvador qualifying for their first ever World Cup finals as a result.
