Although noted for his excellent ball control and tactical knowledge at outside-left, Gordon Wright played on the opposite wing against Finland in his only match in the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. After attending St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, Wright, the son of an East Riding clergyman, went up to Queen’s College, Cambridge, where he son a place in the University XI for three years (1904-06). On leaving Cambridge, he accepted a post at Hymer’s College, Hull, teaching Natural History and Science. In 1906 he was elected captain of Hull City for whom he played 152 league games and became the first player from the club to be capped. Wright also played occasionally for Leyton and Portsmouth and turned out regularly for the Corinthians. He went on the Corinthians Easter tour in Europe in 1906, to North American later the same year and in 1907 he was a member of the Corinthians team which toured South Africa. Between 1908 and 1913, he won 20 amateur caps and, unusually, he won his only full cap, against Wales in 1906, before he had been recognized by the amateur selectors. After obtaining his degree at Cambridge, Gordon Wright later graduated from the Royal School of Mines and in 1913 he went to South Africa as a mining engineer where, apart from a brief spell in America, he spent the rest of his life.
