Fritz Buchloh

Fritz Buchloh began his career with VfB Speldorf as defender and forward before his talent as a goalkeeper was discovered. Starting in 1932 he was fielded internationally, usually taking turns with Hans Jakob in subsequent years and winning a total of 17 caps. He was a member of the 1934 and 1938 German World Cup squads but did not get a chance to play. After the Olympics he went to Berlin and played for the local club Hertha BSC and, at the same time, qualified as a football coach. Subsequently, he returned to his native Ruhr and played for Schwarz-Weiß Essen. He represented West German regions and Berlin in 46 games.

Buchloh worked as an administrative officer in his home town of Mülheim. Fighting in World War II he suffered 12 bone fractures and was interned in France as a civilian after the war. After his release he became national coach in Iceland, being one of the first Germans that were allowed to work internationally again. He was later coach of Lower Rhine Football Federation and his former club Schwarz-Weiß Essen and was also one of the founding members of German Football Coaches’ Association. In later years he represented an industrial company before he finally established his own company as a supplier for the mining industry.
