Biography

Jenö Buzánszky was a member of the “Golden Team,” the Hungarian national team known as the Magical Magyars, who were defeated in the 1954 FIFA World Cup in the Miracle of Bern by Germany. Buzánszky, a defender, did not play for a Budapest club, but was with Dorogi Bányász from 1947-60, after spending one year with Pécsi VSK. He was capped 48 times, playing in all five matches during the 1954 World Cup. In 1952 Buzánszky won Olympic gold with Hungary, and helped them win the Central European title in 1953. After 274 league games Buzánszky ended his active career and began working as a coach. He managed Dorogi AC from 1961-65, 1968-69, and 1971-78, and also spent time with Esztergomi Vasas (1965-68, 1969-70), and was with Fősped Szállitók in 1970-71. Buzánszky was elected Vice-President of the Hungarian Football Association in 1996, and the FC Dorogi stadium is named after him. Buzánszky was the last surviving Hungarian player from the “Golden Team.”
