Biography

At club level Indian football goalkeeper Subramaniam Narayan played for several teams including Caltex and Tata SC, representing the latter from 1958 until 1970. For the India national football team Narayan played in nine matches from 1956 to 1964, making his international début at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Peter Thangaraj played in goal for India’s first match of the Melbourne Games, with Narayan playing in their semi-final match against Yugoslavia and their third-place play-off against Bulgaria. India lost 3–0 to the Bulgarian team to finish fourth overall. Four years later he was once again part of India’s squad for the Olympics, this time for the 1960 Roma Games, although he did not play in any matches during the tournament. Narayan was also part of India’s football squads for the 1958 Asian Games and the 1964 AFC Asian Cup, with the team finishing as runners-up in the latter.
