During the 1980s Tonny Maringgi represented Indonesia in table tennis at multiple international competitions. Maringgi had an impressive record at the South-East Asian Games, winning his first gold in 1981 with compatriot Sinyo Supit in the doubles. He won three more doubles titles at the SEA Games (1985, 1987, 1989), along with team gold in both 1987 and 1989, and a team silver in 1985. In 1988 he won an Olympic qualification tournament to earn himself a place at the Seoul Games, where he competed in the singles. Maringgi also had the honour of being the flagbearer for Indonesia at the Opening Ceremony in Seoul. After his playing career he became a coach in the sport, leading the national team to gold at the Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships in Manila in 2010.
