In 1974 he also won the Malaysia Cup with the team, scoring the winning goal in their 2–1 victory against Perak.
From 1970 to 1975 Bakar also played for the Malaysia national football team. In 1972 he was part of the squad that competed at the München Olympics where he played in their 3–0 win against the United States. Two years later he won bronze at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran after Malaysia beat North Korea 2–1.
Following his playing career Bakar worked as a coach, helping the national team to qualify for the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Despite qualifying, however, Malaysia then took part in the US-led boycott of the Games. In 2004 Bakar was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s Hall of Fame.
