Biography

Best known as a defender, but active in many positions, Schijvenaar played the best years of his career for EDO Haarlem, closing out his playing days with Aalsmeer. He was surprisingly selected to play left back in the national team in 1947, but Schijvenaar managed to earn his place and he played a total of 18 international matches through 1951. His last international match was the always heavily contested “Low Countries Derby” against Belgium. Schijvenaar had to be carried off with a broken leg after a rough charge by Jef Mermans, leaving the Dutch with 10 players, eventually losing 6-7. Schijvenaar was also a good baseball player, representing EDO in that sport as well. He played several matches for the Dutch national baseball team, one of three Oranje players to do so along with Joop Odenthal and Cor Wilders.
