Hans Tetzner

Hans Tetzner enjoyed a long career as an attacker for the Groningen side Be Quick. Débuting in the first team in 1915, he played there through 1926, coinciding with the club’s period of fame. During that period, the team won nine Northern Dutch titles, culminating in the national title in 1920. This eventually resulted in nearly all of the team’s players of that year making the Dutch national team, including Hans and his brother, Max Tetzner. Hans eventually won eight caps (1923-25), including the Dutch campaign at the Paris Olympics, in which the Dutch were only narrowly defeated by Uruguay, and missed the bronze after a replay with Sweden.

Both Max and Hans were all-round sportsmen. Max won two Dutch speed skating titles (Hans also competed), and successfully completed the 1929 Elfstedentocht (a 200 km race). Hans was also a decent tennis player, once reaching the semi-finals of the Dutch national doubles championships, and track sprinter. After completing his medical studies, he became a surgeon. Serving as team doctor for the 1936 Dutch Olympic cycling team, he later joined Amsterdam football club Ajax as a medic. A noted figure in Amsterdam, he helped set up the equestrian event jumping at Amsterdam in 1928 and was a panellist on the popular 1960s television show, Wie van de Drie?.
