Biography

Gustaf Bergström played as a forward in Sweden’s very first international match, winning 11-3 against Norway in July 1908. He represented Sweden at the London Olympics in the same year and played both of Sweden’s matches in the tournament, where he scored Sweden’s only goal in the 12-1 defeat against England. Until 1909 he won a total of six caps and led the national team in his first and last international matches. With his club Örgryte IS he was a five-time Swedish champion (1902, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1909). Three of his brothers also played football for Örgryte including Olympian Erik Bergström. Bergström was also one of Sweden’s best track and field athletes, winning two gold (pole vault, 4x100 m relay) and one bronze (long jump) at the 1903 Swedish championships.
