Biography

Francis “Hun” Ryan earned three caps for the US national team, playing in the 1928 and 1936 Olympics, in one match each, and at the 1934 World Cup, as a midfielder and forward. In club soccer he started his career with the Lighthouse Boys Club team, but in 1929 played in the American Soccer League (ASL) with New York Galicia. He was with them for one season before moving back to Lighthouse, but Ryan is mostly known for playing for the Philadelphia German-Americans from 1931-36, helping them win the 1934/35 ASL title and the 1936 National Challenge Cup. Ryan served in the US Army from 1942-45 with the Custer Division. He returned to soccer after the war, playing with the Philadelphia Nationals and helping them win the ASL Lewis Cup in 1948/49 and 1951/52. Ryan was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 1958.
