Euthymos won the boxing championship in 484, 476, and 472 BCE, but lost in the final to Theagenes of Thasos in 480 BCE. It was the only known time that Euthymos was ever defeated. The Greek historian, Pliny, noted that his victory statues at Olympia and his home region of Lokria were both struck by lightning in the same day. It was felt to be a sign and sacrifices were offered to Euthymos both while he was living and after his death.
