Biography

Oibotas was the first athlete from Achaea (in which Dymai was located) to win an Olympic crown. But he received no acclaim from his townsfolk so he pronounced a curse so that all future Achaean athletes would not win at Olympia. When centuries passed with no Olympic victories, the Achaeans asked the Oracle at Delphi for advice. The Oracle told them to honor their champion and Oibotas’ victory statue was erected in 460 BCE. The curse was thus lifted and in the same year, Sostratos, of Pellene in Achaea, won the boys’ stadion at Olympia.
