Biography

Alexander Mühle was a German volleyball referee, player, and coach. Born in Tallinn, Estonia, Mühle moved to West Germany in 1960. In 1963–64 Mühle was the captain of the senior national volleyball team, and coached them from 1961–64. From 1960 to 1986 Mühle also coached the Hamburg Sport-Verein women’s team.

Mühle first worked as a volleyball referee in 1948 whilst in Tallinn, becoming an international referee in 1963. Mühle officiated in more than 2,000 games, including 50 European Championship finals. Mühle was the referee in men’s and women’s matches at the 1972 München Olympics and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Outside of sport Mühle worked as a civil engineer and as a Russian translator whilst based in the city government of Hamburg. Mühle translated international volleyball rules into German, and published articles on volleyball in the German press.

In recognition of his services to volleyball, Mühle was awarded with the DVV Badge of Honor in bronze (1980), silver (1982), and gold (1999).
