Biography

Professor Henry Hiatt, known as Howard, was a gymnastic instructor, teacher, examiner and judge. He was associated for many years with the Hurstpierpont College and Gymnastics Club in Sussex, and before World War I was on the staff of the Bristol Municipal Secondary Schools, as he was a great advocate for physical training being part of basic education. At the 1900 Paris Olympics, despite finishing 124th overall, Hiatt finished fifth for all round jumping and vaulting, for which he received a special prize. In 1915 Hiatt published his Manual of Self-Physical Training for Home Use.
