Biography

John McPhail, active in gymnastics with the Glasgow YMCA throughout the 1890s, was noted for his proficiency in parallel bars, having won a gold medal in the event in 1893. He also was an active judge with the Scottish Amateur Gymnastics Association throughout the 1900s.

In 1908, McPhail was one of eight Scotsmen selected for the Great Britain gymnastics delegation at the 1908 Olympics in London. Though also listed as a team official in the list of whips and stewards, he nevertheless was one of 45 British competitors in the team event.
