Biography

From 1938 László Baranyai competed for NTE, then from 1940 for Postás, and from 1952 to 1957 for Budapesti Honvéd. Between 1939 and 1954 Baranyai won 14 individual Hungarian championship titles, and in 1954 he also finished first in the individual all around.

From 1941 to 1955 he represented the Hungarian national team 24 times. He was a bronze medalist at the 1948 London Olympics and a member of the second-placed team at the 1949 Budapest College World Championships.

From 1952 Baranyai was a student of the Independent Sports Academy. From 1954 he was an officer of the Stalin Military Political Academy. From 1957 he worked as a teacher at the Ferenc Rákóczi Military High School, and from 1958 he worked as a coach of the Budapesti Honvéd. From 1962 he was a physical education officer at the Kilián György Flying Officer School in Szolnok.

In 1964 Baranyai obtained a diploma as a gymnastics instructor in the three-year correspondence course at the College of Physical Education. From 1966 until his retirement he was an employee of the Military Sports Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was also a professional soldier, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel of the National Guard. His wife Erzsébet Balázs was also an Olympic gymnast.
