Biography

Peter Rost was on the gold medal winning East German team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, winning the final after a 23-22 overtime victory against the Soviet Union. He played 216 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 339 goals. In 1974, he was silver medal winner at the Worlds and in 1978 he helped the team win bronze.

Domestically, Rost played with SC Leipzig and helped them win GDR Championships in 1972, 1976, and 1979. He was named 1984 Handball Player of the Year, and later turned to coaching and sports administration. His wife was handball player Christina Rost and their son Frank later became a very successful football (soccer) professional playing as a goalie with SV Werder Bremen, FC Schalke 04, and Hamburger SV in the German Bundesliga.
