Forward Rainer Zimmermann was on the East German handball team at the 1972 München Olympics that unfortunately lost the bronze medal match, 19-16, against Romania. In 1970, Zimmermann won a silver medal at the World Championships. Domestically, he played with SC Dynamo Berlin. In 1966, Zimmermann was the top scorer in the East German Oberliga.
