Twice a handball Olympian, Zlatan Saračević won a gold medal in 1996 with Croatia and a bronze medal in 1988 with Yugoslavia. He also helped Croatia win the European Championship in 1992 and 1993, adding a silver medal in 2002 and a bronze medal in 1994. His other palmarès include a World Championship bronze medal in 1995, and a gold medal from the 1993 Mediterranean Games.

Saračević went into coaching, eventually leading Zamet, Nyíregyhazi, Čelik, Dubrovnik, PPD Zagreb, and Podravka Vegeta. In 1996 he was given the Franjo Bučar State Award for Sports.
