Biography

Abel Almaraz was an Argentine boxer who competed in the bantamweight division. Almaraz won the gold medal at the 1963 Pan American Games in São Paulo with victory over Marcíal Guttiérez of Panama. The following year he competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where he won his first bout against Chris Rafter of Ireland before losing to Jeong Sin-Jo of South Korea. Almaraz won his first fight as a professional when he defeated Pedro Guevara in November 1965 in La Carlota. His pro career got off to a promising start, winning 13 out of his next 14 fights, before losing most of his later fights, including his last seven contests. After his retirement Almaraz became a boxing professor at the sports department of the Faculty of Law at the University of Buenos Aires.
