Biography

Jim Cater of the United Scottish BC lost just three bouts in his 24-fight amateur career between 1920-22. Hs first defeat was in the 1920 ABA featherweight final, when he lost to United Scottish club-mate John Fleming. On his way to the final, Cater caused a major surprise by beating the defending champion, and four-times ABA winner, George Baker of Hendon BC. The following year, Baker gained revenge by beating Cater to win his fifth ABA final. Cater’s only other defeat as an amateur was at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics, when he was beaten by the Italian bronze medalist Edoardo Garzena.

Cater was the Scottish amateur featherweight champion 1920-22 and represented his home country in international matches against Denmark, Ireland, and the very first match against England, at Edinburgh in 1920. Cater turned professional in April 1922 and on his début beat Tommy Milligan who, two years later, beat Ted “Kid” Lewis to win the British, Commonwealth and European middleweight title. The only title Cater won in his 53-fight eight-year professional career was the Scottish welterweight title. Cater’s nephew Jimmy was also a professional boxer in the 1940s.
