Biography

Arthur Clifton boxed for the Port of London Authority Police team, and was the 1924 ABA heavyweight champion. He won the title after his opponent H. Billings of the London Fire Brigade retired in the first round after damaging a thumb following a punch to Clifton’s shoulder. Victory saw Clifton compete at the 1924 Paris Olympics, and after enjoying a points win over the American Eddie Eagan (the 1923 ABA heavyweight champion and defending Olympic light-heavyweight gold medalist) in the first round, Clifton had to withdraw after injuring his hand.

Clifton’s first ABA final in 1922 saw him lose to Harry Mitchell in the light-heavyweight division. He came close to winning a second heavyweight title on three more occasions (1925, 1927-28), but each time lost in the semi-final to the eventual champion. Clifton was a reserve for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
