Biography

At the age of seventeen, Colin Jones was the youngest boxer to represent Great Britain in Olympic competition until Amir Khan broke his record by a few months. Chosen for Montreal after winning the Amateur Boxing Association title, he was defeated in his 2nd bout by the eventual bronze medallist, Victor Zilberman.

Jones retained his ABA title in 1977 and then embarked on a professional career which was highlighted by British, British Commonwealth and European welterweight title victories. He had three unsuccessful attempts at a world title, fighting to a draw and a narrow points defeat against Milt McCrory but was outclassed by Don Curry in a contest that prompted his retirement. Jones has worked as a colour commentator on boxing for BBC Wales since his retirement. He was also an assistant coach for the Welsh Boxing team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He was named BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year in 1983 and was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in her 2020 Birthday Honours for services to boxing in Wales.
