At the 1974 World Championships, Cuba’s Emilio Correa won the title by defeating America’s Clint Jackson in the final. The next year, Jackson defeated Correa in a semi-final and won the 1975 Pan American Games gold medal. Both were back in this class in Montréal and were considered the favorites. But they each went out to Venezuela’s Pedro José Gamarro, a bronze medalist at the 1975 Pan American Games, who defeated Correa by a third-round TKO in round three, and Jackson by a narrow 3-2 decision in the quarter-finals. Gamarro advanced to the final where he faced East Germany’s Jochen Bachfeld. Bachfeld had fought at the 1972 Olympics, losing early, but his experience was telling in Montréal as he eked out a 3-2 decision to win the gold medal. Gamarro never turned professional and never returned to the Olympics, but he did win another Pan American Games bronze medal in 1983, this time as a middleweight.
