Description

The National Olympic Committee of the US Virgin Islands was formed in 1966 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1967. Since making its Olympic début in 1968, the Caribbean island has only missed the Olympics Games of 1980.

Peter Holmberg won a silver medal in 1988 Finn monotype sailing, the only medal yet won by an athlete from the US Virgin Islands.

The US Virgin Islands competed at every Olympic Winter Games from 1988 to 2002 and, after missing the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games, appeared again in 2014 and 2022. To date, it has had Winter Olympians participating in Alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton. Their best-known Olympian has been luge slider Anne Abernathy, who competed five times – 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002 – recording the nation’s best Winter Olympic finish in 1988, when she was 16th in women’s singles.
