Damdinjavyn Bandi took up boxing after he enrolled at the National University of Mongolia. From 1966 to 1976 Bandi won seven national titles in his home country, as well as the Romanian Golden Belt Tournament. In 1971 he won silver in the -67 kg class at the Asian Boxing Championships in Teheran, before representing Mongolia as a welterweight at the München Olympics. At the Games he defeated Emma Ankudey (GHA) before losing by knock-out to the eventual silver medallist János Kajdi (HUN). Four years later Bandi returned to the Olympics, competing in the same weight class at the Montréal Games, but lost to Mike McCallum (JAM) in his opening bout. After his boxing career he had a long and successful career as a coach, including leading the Mongolian boxing team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan winning gold in the bantamweight.
