Biography

The son of a 1930s professional boxer, Johnny Ould and his twin brother Dave both became fine boxers. Dave was a heavyweight who fought for the ABA title whereas Johnny was a light-heavyweight who won the ABA title in both 1959 and 1960.

As youngsters, the Ould twins used to regularly spar for their good friend Henry Cooper. A member of the famous Fisher AC, Johnny represented London in 1959 in the match against New York at the Royal Albert Hall, and also competed in the European Amateur Championships at Lucerne. The following year he went to Moscow as part of the London team and was then selected for the Roma Olympics where he lost in the first round to the Bulgarian Petar Spasov.

Ould turned professional in 1961 and had 23 fights in a six-year career with a 10-11-2 record, with five of his ten wins coming in his first five bouts. Ould later became a movie and television actor and appeared in one episode of the cult TV programme Doctor Who in 1988. Dave outlived his brother by ten years before dying in 2024.
