Biography

In the 1950s, Werner Vetterli was Switzerland’s strongest modern pentathlete. At the 1954 World Championships, he won a silver medal in the individual competition, adding to 1954 and 1955 team medals. His hopes for an Olympic medal were dashed when Switzerland boycotted the Melbourne Olympics following in protest of the Hungarian Uprising. Following his sports career, he became a television presenter. He became most notable for his appearance in “Aktenzeichen XY … ungelöst” (1969-1976), a show aiming to solve crimes. Vetterli then turned to politics, and served two terms in the National Council of Switzerland for the Swiss People’s Party.
