Dave Boyes first rowed for Canada at the 1985 World Championships, where he finished tenth in the eights alongside Chris Taylor and the non-Olympians Scott Anderson, Dean Brown, Chris Cookson, Brian Elstone, Cam Harvey, Guy Savard, and Gregory Smith. Boyes, Cookson, and Taylor, with non-Olympians Saul Adams, Mike Cullen, Dave Jenkins, Gary May, Paul Nielsen, and John Nowlan, then formed the eights team that was fourth at the next edition of the tournament. Adams, Boyes, Cookson, Elstone, May, and Taylor were joined by non-Olympians Joe Camillo, Ross Lizee, and Don Wood and placed sixth at the 1987 World Championships. Boyes did not return to the World Championships until 1993, when he won the eights title alongside Gavin Hassett, Jeffrey Lay, Pat Newman, Brian Peaker, and the non-Olympians Christopher Cookson, Robert Fontaine, Peter Sommerwil and Bryan Thompson. He was partnered with Peaker in the double sculls at the 1994 edition, finishing eighth, and then joined Hassett, Lay, and Peaker on the lightweight coxless fours crew. The quartet finished fourth at the 1995 World Championships, but was just over half a second behind the gold medal-winning Danish team at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Peaker then took a two-year hiatus from the sport, but returned in an attempt to qualify for the 2000 Games. He competed at the 1999 Pan American Games in the lightweight coxless fours, but did not medal. He then joined Lay, Newman, and the non-Olympians Matt McCarthy, Graham McLaren, Erik Oinonen, Anthony Shearing, Ben Storey, and Edward Winchester on the eights crew, but placed fourth at that year’s World Championships. He retired soon after, returning to his career as a firefighter.
