Biography

Brian Peaker had a long, but sporadic career in international rowing with the Canadian team. His first major tournament was the 1985 World Championships, where he finished fifth in the lightweight coxless fours alongside the non-Olympians Dave Henry, Bob Thomas, and Ryan Tierney. The quartet finished tenth at the following edition, but took home a bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. Peaker was then absent from the international stage until the early 1990s, when he returned to win a gold medal in the eights at the 1993 World Championships with Dave Boyes, Gavin Hassett, Jeffrey Lay, Pat Newman, and the non-Olympians Christopher Cookson, Robert Fontaine, Peter Sommerwil and Bryan Thompson. The following year he competed in the double sculls alongside Boyes and finished eighth, before returning to the lightweight coxless fours at the 1995 edition and placing fourth with Boyes, Hassett, and Lay. Suffering from injuries, Peaker’s last major international competition was the 1996 Summer Olympics, where his lightweight coxless fours crew took the silver medal, missing the opportunity to steal gold from the Danes by just over half a second. He retired soon after and took up coaching, occasionally participating in master’s level events.
