Biography

Laurie Wallace’s first athletic passion was rugby football and, in a precursor to the Canadian Football League, he played from 1921 through 1923 with the Toronto Argonauts, winning the 9th Grey Cup with them in 1921. He also took up rowing with the club and brought his experience with him to the University of Toronto, where he was a member of the school’s varsity coxed eights crew that was selected to represent Canada at the 1924 Summer Olympics. At the Games, his squad, which consisted of Arthur Bell, Ivor Campbell, Robert Hunter, William Langford, Harold Little, John Smith, Warren Snyder, and Norman Taylor, lost their heat to the United States, but earned the right to compete in the final by winning the repêchage. There they were again defeated by the United States, but captured the silver medal ahead of the Italians and the Britons. At the University of Toronto, he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity.
